Barking up the wrong tree!

I have been dealing with an interesting issue lately involving my husbands grandfathers family tree. Working with details I had been given about his life I was happily researching what I believed to be his family.  I had his birth certificate so I was working from a primary source and was steadily adding facts, dates, people and places and quite happy with the results for a while.
I had been told that he spent a good part of his childhood in Glasgow and that he had served in the First World War and had been a Prisoner of War.  Then in the 1920's he took up a job as a Prison Warder in Malaya.  He became engaged and in 1928 married Violet Helen Marguerite Murray in Singapore.  The stories were that the marriage was greatly affected by the death of their oldest son and broke down although they didn't divorce.  When Singapore fell in 1942 he was working as a Prison Officer at Changi and while he got his wife and son Ronald on a boat to England he remained behind.  He became a Pri…

Trove Tuesday - The Murder of Patrick McCooey

These articles involve my 5th Great Grandmother Ann Puckeridge (nee Maund) and her son William Puckeridge (my half 4th Great grand Uncle).  Ann was born in England and married her first husband Joseph Puckeridge around 1796.  There are records of two children being baptised in St Marylebone, Middlesex,England for this couple Sarah (1799-?) and James (1800-?).  Their lives took a turn in 1800, when Joseph was sentenced to death for stealing scotch ticking, this sentence was later remitted to transportation for Life.  In 1801 Joseph, the convict and Ann his free wife arrived in Australia on board the ship 'Earl Cornwallis', their English born children's fate is unknown.  They went on to have the following children in Australia: William (1802-1877), John (1804-1885), Ann Sawyer nee Puckeridge (1806-1882), Mary Ann (1809-1818), Richard (1812-1881), Joseph (1814-1857) and Henry (1817-1819).   Joseph worked as a brickmaker in Australia and died in Sydney in 1818.  In 1820 Ann ma…

Saturday's Snapshots: Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery

I took a research trip to the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery to see where Laura Stevens (see post here) was buried.  My efforts to try and confirm that she is my missing relative have thus far not been successful.  The cemetery authorities have no record of her burial in this cemetery (see here) and there is no marker for her grave there either.  I was informed that that council only took over management of the cemetery in 1969 and prior to that the records were maintained by the various Churches with many records being lost or poorly kept.  Many of the graves in this cemetery are unmarked or in such a state of disrepair that you can no longer determine who is buried in that position.
I was not surprised that Laura Stevens grave was unmarked as she was a cook and laundress at Oberne Station, Humula and no family were with her when she died.  The Deputy Coroner had filled out her death certificate with most of her personal details being recorded as not known and she had been buried po…
