Death of Mr. Harold Maclean.
We regret to have to record the death of an old and respected Civil servant, Mr. Harold Maclean, the Comptroller General of Prisons, who died at his residence, at Potts Point, on Wednesday morning.  Mr. Maclean left his office last month intending to recruit his health during three months leave of absence, but unfortunately, he was seized with an attack of typhoid, which complicated with pleurisy, eventually caused his death.  He was the son of a well-known early resident of the colony, Captain Maclean, and was born on the 14th May, 1828, being thus 61 years of age.  His career in the Civil Service has been a lengthy and most creditable one, he having served in various capacities for 41 years, and having always been looked upon as an officer of superior intelligence and reliability.  His reports on various public matters which he was called upon to inquire into were considered especially valuable, and his services in this capacity were frequently availed of by Ministers.  He entered the service in 1846 as a probationary clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Department, receiving a salary of only 5s. per day.  In 1852 he was appointed Assistant-Commissioner for Goldfields, which office he occupied until 1858, when he became Commissioner in charge of the Western Goldfields.  In 1864 he was made Sheriff of the colony, and in 1874 he was appointed Comptroller-General of Prisons and Reformatories, which position he held until his death.  The funeral will take place at the Waverley cemetery, at 2.30 this afternoon.  In consequence of the sad event the Comptroller's office was closed during Wednesday afternoon.

DEATH OF MR. RODERICK URQUHART, OF YANGERY.
(FROM WARRNAMBOOL STANDARD. FEB. 5)
This event took place at the residence of the deceased, at Yangery-park, near Warrnambool, on Tuesday, February 2nd. Mr. Urquhart had been in ill-health for some time past, and on Saturday last his illness assumed a more serious form, caused by the bursting of a blood-vessel on the brain, which terminated fatally at 5 p.m. on the day named.  He was buried yesterday afternoon in Warrnambool Cemetery, the funeral being attended by numerous relatives and friends.  He leaves two sons and four daughters to mourn his loss.
Mr Urquhart was one of the pioneers of the Western District.  He was a native of Ross-shire, and arrived in Sydney under an engagement with Captain McLean, in September 1837, and Mr. Urquhart remained for some years as his manager on a station in the Illawarra District.  In 1842 Mr. Urquhart came overland from New South Wales, reaching Melbourne in February, and he arrived in Belfast, Port Fairy, on the 12th of March in the same year.  In 1843 he became manager of the Belfast special survey for Mr. James Atkinson, and Mr. Urquhart erected a residence for himself at Rosebrook.  During that year Mr. Atkinson and Mr. William Rutledge concluded from negotiations in reference to the Belfast Special Survey, and in January, 1844, Mr. Urquhart settled on a farm on the Farnham Survey, known as Look-out Hill. and remained there between three and four years.  In 1847 he purchased the first portion of the Yangery Park Estate, and brought the remainder in 1852.  By his indominable energy and perseverance, Mr. Urquhart succeeded in making that property what it now is - second to none in Victoria of the same acreage.
Mr. Urquhart was a Highlander of the old school, and his well-known hospitality and kindness secured him a large circle of friends, to whom he was much attached.

It is with deep regret that we have to record the unexpected death of Mr Angus Urquhart, of 'Moondah,' Larpent, which took place at his residence on Wednesday last.  The deceased had only been ailing seriously for about three days.  When Dr Wynne saw him on Monday he realised that the case was of a most serious character, and the services of Dr Pettigrew, of Camperdown, were immediately requisitioned, but medical skill could not stay the hand of death, and the deceased passed away as stated from acute pneumonia.  The deceased resided for many years at Yangery Park, Warrnambool, but decided to settle in Colac when Mertoun Park was cut up, buying a substantial portion of it, and erecting quite a palatial residence there.  He took a great interest in stock, being a breeder of sheep and shorthorn cattle, and was for many years a judge at the Melbourne shows.  He was 52 years of age, and was twice married.  Although he was only a comparatively short time in the district, he was commencing to take a deep interest in it, and in this respect will be a distinct loss.  By all who knew him he was held in the highest esteem, being a thorough gentleman, and his death when his sphere of usefulness was being widened will be deeply regretted.  He leaves a wife and family to mourn their loss.  His remains will be interred in the local cemetery today, the funeral being timed to leave his late residence at half past two o'clock.

Death of a Pioneer.
By the death of Mr. Roderick Robert Urquhart, of Boomerah, Hexham, says the 'Pastoral Review,' there is removed from the sheep world and from the social and sporting life of the western district of Victoria one of its most familiar as well as popular personalities.  His father was Mr. Roderick Urquhart, of Ross-shire Scotland, a pioneer who travelled overland from Sydney to Port Fairy, Victoria, in 1842, and eventually tool up the old home of Yangery near Tower Hill, in 1846, where his son, the subject of this memoir, was born in 1849.  In 1857 old Mr. Urquhart, with his wife, returned to Scotland for the education of their family of two sons and five daughters in Inverness, and returned to Yangery in 1892.  in 1870 the station of Ardachy, near Branxholme, was bought for the two sons, Angus and Roderick, and they held it until their father's death in 1875.  They then sold it, and resolved to strike out in Queensland.  Mr. Robert Urquhart took a journey of investigation in 1876, and after travelling over a great part of Queensland, he, in partnership with his brother and his cousin, Mr. Angus Fraser, took up the run of Kaliduwarry, in the Birdsville district, and stocked the country with cattle.  They had trouble with the blacks at first; a stockman was killed, and Mr. Urquhart narrowly escaped the same fate.  This run was held for twenty-seven years.  In 1882 Mr. Urquhart returned to Victoria, and in the following year married Miss Helen (Faerie) Armstrong, the third daughter of Mr. William Armstrong, of Hexham Park.  Not long after he, in partnership with his brother-in-law, Mr. William Armstrong, rented all the Victorian properties of the late Mr. Armstrong, and eventually became the proprietor of Boomerah, a portion of the original Hexham Park, which he held till his death.  By reason of his long residence in the district and his kindly, cheery nature, he had made numberless friends.  Probably no one in the district had a wider range of friends among all classes, and all will miss his cheery greeting.  He was a connecting link with the very early days of the colony, and could be counted an authority on the station lore of the district.  No man better kept up the tradition  of the hospitality of the station homestead nor had kindlier relations with his neighbours and employees than Mr. Urquhart.

The Kendall Children.

I started this post a while ago and was going to finally finish and post it yesterday however our four grandchildren came over and I got sidetracked.  Our grandchildren range in age now from six down to one;  they are so full of life (each of them lights up a room when they enter it) and we feel extremely blessed to have them in our lives.  After spending the afternoon researching this post, their arrival made this tragedy even more poignant for me and so I appreciated their company even more than usual and hugged them a bit tighter too!  This morning I woke up to a cold, wet and windy Wagga day and the thought of three little girls out in August weather like this, in light weight dresses with no shoes or jumpers impacted on me even more. Those poor babies! One of the girls was found still clasping her doll that she had carried with her over the whole tragic journey. When my husband and I were looking around the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery some time ago we came across a very sad he

Trove Tuesday - The Murder of Patrick McCooey

These articles involve my 5th Great Grandmother Ann Puckeridge (nee Maund) and her son William Puckeridge (my half 4th Great grand Uncle).  Ann was born in England and married her first husband Joseph Puckeridge around 1796.  There are records of two children being baptised in St Marylebone, Middlesex,   England for this couple Sarah (1799-?) and James (1800-?).  Their lives took a turn in 1800, when Joseph was sentenced to death for stealing scotch ticking, this sentence was later remitted to transportation for Life.  In 1801 Joseph, the convict and Ann his free wife arrived in Australia on board the ship Earl Cornwallis , their English born children's fate is unknown.  They went on to have the following children in Australia: William (1802-1877), John (1804-1885), Ann Sawyer nee Puckeridge (1806-1882), Mary Ann (1809-1818), Richard (1812-1881), Joseph (1814-1857) and Henry (1817-1819).   Joseph worked as a brickmaker in Australia and died in Sydney in 1818.  In 1820 Ann married J
