Saturday’s Newspaper Snippet: Made himself a nuisance

Today’s post involves my second great uncle William Henry Lambert.  The writer seems not to be a fan of the working class becoming the political class.  A drunken, shearer and a nuisance it really sounds like William lived up to the writers expectations of such a man.  Life for a politician was obviously much easier in those days, no mobile phones to record the act and no social media to spread it widely instantaneously.  One can imagine the scandal a man of his political standing would endure these days in the same circumstances!
More posts mentioning William can be found here, here and here.

FEDERAL MEMBER FINED

Made Himself a Nuisance

FORMER LORD MAYOR

MELBOURNE, Today.

William H. Lambert, a shearer, aged 42 years, member of the House of Representatives for West Sydney and a former Lord Mayor of Sydney, was arrested last night in Bourke street on a charge of having been drunk and disorderly.  He spent three hours in a cell before being bailed out.
In the City Court today Lambert, who did not appear, was fined £1.  In default of payment seven days’ imprisonment was ordered.
The fine was paid but no application was made to estreat the bond.
Lambert was arrested following a complaint that he was lounging about a building which was being used by a number of people, and that he was a nuisance.

The Kendall Children.

I started this post a while ago and was going to finally finish and post it yesterday however our four grandchildren came over and I got sidetracked.  Our grandchildren range in age now from six down to one;  they are so full of life (each of them lights up a room when they enter it) and we feel extremely blessed to have them in our lives.  After spending the afternoon researching this post, their arrival made this tragedy even more poignant for me and so I appreciated their company even more than usual and hugged them a bit tighter too!  This morning I woke up to a cold, wet and windy Wagga day and the thought of three little girls out in August weather like this, in light weight dresses with no shoes or jumpers impacted on me even more. Those poor babies! One of the girls was found still clasping her doll that she had carried with her over the whole tragic journey. When my husband and I were looking around the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery some time ago we came a...
